Blue Monday, New Order, 1983 ♪
The year of 2015 marks the 30th anniversary of the release of ‘Blue Monday’ by the English rockband New Order. A good occasion to go back to the success of the track, according to music magazine NME.
.
‘Blue Monday wasn’t made in a vacuum. It might’ve influenced decades of dance and rock music, but it scavenged the archives for plenty of ‘inspiration’ itself.
The genius is in taking filched elements and other tricks learned by osmosis and turning them into something that feels new.
When people heard ‘Blue Monday’ they weren’t snottily saying, ‘Well, that bit’s Klein + MBO and that bit’s pure Bobby O’ – they were going, What the hell is THIS?’

‘The song was a club hit before it became a single on the radio. […]
It is still the best-selling 12” of all-time. […]
The title came from a drawing in Kurt Vonnegut’s book, Breakfast of Champions. […] was inspired by Donna Summers’ album track, Our Love, of the Bad Girls album. […]
New Order decided to use the money from Blue Monday’s success to open up their own nightclub, The Haçienda.
The band lost money every time a Blue Monday single was purchased.’

‘How does it feel
When you treat me like you do
And you’ve laid your hands upon me
And told me who you are?I thought I was mistaken
And I thought I heard your words
Tell me, how do I feel?
Tell me now, how do I feel? Those who came before me
Lived through their vocations
From the past until completion
They will turn away no moreAnd I still find it so hard
To say what I need to say
But I’m quite sure that you’ll tell me
Just how I should feel todayI see a ship in the harbor
I can and shall obey
But if it wasn’t for your misfortunes
I’d be a heavenly person todayAnd I thought I was mistaken
And I thought I heard you speak
Tell me how do I feel?
Tell me now, how should I feel? Now I stand here waiting
I thought I told you to leave me
While I walked down to the beach
Tell me, how does it feel
When your heart grows cold? How does it feel?
How does it feel?
How does it feel? And I thought I told you to leave me
While I walked down to the beach
Tell me, how does it feel
When your heart grows cold?’
