Yes, blue lipstick. New year = new rules.
Anything Blue review – #BlueMakeup – Is blue lipstick a thing?
When Lupita Nyong’o was spotted in December 2015 at the premiere of Star Wars: the Force Awakens with sapphire blue lips, we just LOVED IT. And the best thing is, blue lipstick is for everyone.
To find out how to paint your lips blue, read our reviews from 2 makeup artists interviews: Nick Barose and Tracy Alfajora (from Beth Shapouri’s GLAMOUR article and Julie Schott’s article in ELLE Magazine).
Forget about red lipstick: from 2016 onwards, blue will be on everyone’s lips.
1 – How to get sapphire galactic blue lips (Nick Barose to GLAMOUR)
- Prepare your lips with a moisturizing lip balm
- Mix lip products with eye products (= eyeliner to cover the whole lips + eye shadow or eye pencil in the center) for a dramatic effect
- Apply transparent gloss or another lip balm over the result
- Be creative and try other shades of blue!
Makeup artist Nick Barose, who created Lupita’s fabulous blue lips for Star Wars premiere, explains his technique as follows:
‘I used [Lancôme] Drama Liqui-pencil in Minuit to trace and fill in lips to create a base color. Next, with a lip brush I dabbed a bit of the balm on top of the color. Last, I applied Color Design Eyeshadow in Sapphire Lace, a metallic blue, in the center of the lips to brighten and enhance the metallic effect.’

2 – The power of blue lips (Tracy Alfajora to ELLE Magazine)
According to makeup artist Tracy Alfajora, blue lips ‘have the attention-grabbing magnetism of freshly bleached hair (minus the damage) or visible nipples (without getting flagged on Instagram)‘.
She adds that absolutely everyone can wear deep indigo lips:
‘There’s a futuristic sexiness to blue that classic Bordeaux can’t deliver. It’s striking on paler skin and complementary to a darker skin tone.’
Her tip: less is more. She suggests to prepare the look with a light makeup for the skin and the eyes to put the lips in perspective.
‘I feel like girls want something more fun to brighten the face or offset a dark wardrobe. It’s close to Goth, but just a slight shift to a color that’s happier and more youthful, poppy and fun.’
3 – Are blue lips a thing?
It seems that they are. A thing.
Back in 2008, Louis Vuitton first tried the audacious look during the spring-summer show. It was not left unnoticed.
It looks like over the years (see 2011, 2012, 2013/14 and 2015 below), the trend grew stronger.
In 2016, well, we think the world is ready for blue lipstick. We’ve asked a makeup professional from Guerlain about it: read her interview in our February 2016 Edition – #BlueMakeup, interview with Pauline Roffi: Show off your Blue side
